Q&As:

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a simple system to lighten the colour of the teeth.

What system do we use?

At Dental Smiles we offer Boutique Whitening, either daytime or night-time.

How long does it take?

Results are shown in the first 7-10 days.
You should wear your whitening trays once a day everyday for 3-4 weeks - or you can stop before, if you're happy with the shade.
Top-up gels can be purchased as and when you feel necessary.

How does tooth whitening work?

Firstly you need to attend the practice for a consultation, where the dentist will assess your teeth to check if you are suitable for whitening.

Then, if you are, the dentist will take a 3D scan your teeth to send to the lab to make bespoke whitening trays.

Then, the whitening trays will be ready for you to collect after two weeks, You will be invited back to the practice and given the trays and four whitening gels to take home. You will be given the option of either day-time or night-time whitening (both work just as well).

For daytime whitening, the gel is active for 1 hour, for night-time whitening, the gel is active for 8 hours.

Teeth Whitening Steps

  1. Clean the teeth well

  2. Load the trays with the gels

  3. Dry the teeth

  4. Place the trays in your mouth

  5. Wait for either 1 hour daytime or 8 hours night-time

  6. Brush teeth and trays after use

  7. Repeat everyday for next 3-4 weeks or until happy with shade

Am I suitable for tooth whitening?

Many people are suitable candidates for whitening however there are factors that may mean you are not suitable or have to delay treatment, they are as follows:

- you must be 18 or over
- must not be pregnant
- advanced gum disease
- cavities

If you are not suitable we may recommend alternative treatments. Or you may have to complete treatment prior to starting your whitening.

Does it hurt?

Whitening your teeth may make them sensitive, we recommend using a sensitive toothpaste whilst you are whitening. If your sensitivity persists, we advise you to load your whitening trays with sensitive toothpaste and alternate between whitening and sensitive toothpaste in your trays.

How much is tooth whitening?

The cost of tooth whitening with Dental Smiles is £495 for a new patient and £375 for an existing patient.

Is there maintenance?

For daytime whitening, the gel is active for 1 hour, for night-time whitening, the gel is active for 8 hours.
